Hello ladies,

Lip gradation trend was so much raved about last year. I am not sure if India is appreciating or catching up with this trend, but brands are coming up with their line of lip gradation products. Maybelline has recently launched their “Lip Flush Bitten Lip” lipsticks. The goal of these lipsticks is to create a “just bitten lip,” which means soft, cute, and subtle gradient effect. These lipsticks are not named but numbered in a color-coded pattern: RD denotes red shade and OR denotes orange shade. I could spot only two shades in the counter: RD01 and OR01, and I picked the shade “RD01.”

My Experience with Maybelline Lip Flush Bitten Lip RD01

Packaging: Keeping with the gradation theme, this lipstick comes in a glossy silver tube with a color-coded cap having a gradient effect. Red shades come in a red-colored cap packaging. The packaging looks too classy. The brand name printed in red on the silver band adds that edgy look. The cap shuts off with a click, making it travel friendly. All information is printed only on the tear sheet and not on the actual product. However, the shade name is printed in a color-coded sticker at the bottom of the tube. The actual bullet has a flat head and holds a trio color combination to create the gradient effect.

Texture: This lipstick has a soft and glossy texture. Its moisturizing formula adds a gorgeous sheen to it. It applies smoothly on the lips. This lipstick is so lightweight, and layering does not feel heavy on the lips. Its formulation is like that of a tinted lip balm rather than a lipstick. Two to three swipes needed for the color to show up on my pigmented lips. Thus, it is quite hard to get that desired gradient effect on pigmented lips. However, all three colors can be blended, and a customized color can be generated each time on the lips. Although it is glossy, it is non-sticky and not balmy. Its glossy texture gives the lips fuller and juicy look. It has a delicious fruity fragrance.

Shade: Each lipstick contains three colors: a concealing color, a blending color, and a main color. “RD01” consists of a trio of nude beige, soft rose, and hot red. Although it is categorized as a red, the color is not exactly a red. Hot red when blended with nude beige and soft rose gives a blue-toned pink gradation. I quite like this color on me. Moreover, the colors are infused with food grade pigments.

Performance: This lipstick is a moisturizing one and has been launched at the right time when the lips needed that extra moisture. Its moisturizing formula adds a nice sheen, which gives the lips a plumper look. All three colors seem to blend in with each other perfectly. It applies very smoothly on the lips and does not dry out the lips. However, the color clings on to the dry patches of the lips. So exfoliation is a must. It could even be applied as a hydrating lip balm. This lipstick is very easy to remove. It transfers minimally and can survive light snacking. It does not settle into fine lines. It has a delicious fruity scent, which does not linger on the lips for long. As it is a lipstick and not a lip balm, it has a good color payoff and long staying power. Touching up every two hours to keep the lips moisturized is not necessary. Although the initial sheen fades off in two hours, the color leaves behind a pink stain on the lips. It stays on incredibly for more than 6 hours. It keeps the lips hydrated and non-drying.

The gradient effect can be achieved with this lipstick in a go only if you have really pink lips. Others have to conceal the lips with a foundation to get that gradient look. However, I am not into gradient lips, and I do not want to seal the lipstick’s moisturization by applying a foundation on my lips. So I like to use the lipstick as such, and I quite like its color payoff, long staying power, and hydration. Overall, it is a good option to take a break from mattes.
